When I first moved into my house about seven years ago, my good friend, Michelle, who happens to have an AWESOME eye for design, gave me a glass candle holder that she picked up from Illuminations before it went out of business. I don't know the exact price she got it for, but I'm pretty sure it was a steal, after all of the going-out-of-business markdowns.
Now, I'm not usually one to hold onto things, as I am not the hoarder type (I HATE clutter!). But I knew that there was potential inside of that box and it would be worth holding onto.
So seven long years later, I finally decided to dust off that box and make something of it. And that something turned out to be quite wonderful!
Can you believe it only cost me $22 to make this chandelier, which is almost an exact replica of the Pottery Barn version that goes for $299 bucks!
Can you also believe that the original chandelier looked like this:
To transform this outdated brass chandelier into my knock off PB chandelier, I first had to take apart the fixture and drill some holes to hook the lantern onto.
Then, I spray painted it. I used Rustoleum textured paint in dark brown. I started to sand down the brass, but got lazy and only did a section. In the end, it didn't really matter because the paint stuck just fine.
I also had to spray paint the chains and "S" hooks I purchased from Lowe's. I connected the "S" hooks into the holes I drilled then into the chains from which the lantern hangs.

Then, after some simple wiring (black wire to black wire, white to white and don't forget about the grounding wire), I have myself a gorgeous Pottery Barn-like chandelier! Totally beats the hole in the ceiling and wires that were hanging out of it before!
Check out the real version next to mine...you can't even tell the difference!
Here is the cost breakdown:
- candle holder - free (gift from friend)
- brass chandelier - $12 (Craigslist find)
- spray paint - $5.88
- package of "S" hooks - 1.98
- 3 feet of chain - $1.83
That's a savings of over $275! What a steal!
